Les trois juges ont confirmé la condamnation en première instance pour « blanchiment d’argent » et « corruption passive ».
De plus, la sanction prononcée à l’encontre de l’ancien chef d’État âgé de 72 ans a été accentuée.
La peine de neuf ans et six mois de prison décidée au cours de l’été 2017 est passée à douze ans et un mois.
Un des trois juges, Joao Pedro Gebran Neto a commenté cette décision de justice « on vit une tragédie, la tragédie de la corruption ».
La popularité de cet homme issu des quartiers défavorisés et qui a réussi à atteindre la plus haute marche du pouvoir reste très forte au Brésil.
Aux abords du tribunal, de nombreux militants étaient en pleurs après l’annonce de sa condamnation.
